On Saturday, I attended the
Christian Writers of the West meeting that took place at a local Marie Callenders restaurant, at the prompting of my online friend,
Michelle Sutton. At first glance, I felt a bit intimidated - mainly because there wer…

I write what I feel, and feel without thinking. In other words, I don't think before I speak or act. It's quite amazing how many problems this can cause. I've always had this problem. Except for love. I always put a lot of thought into the words "I love you" before speaking them - so much thought, in fact, that I often found it easier to not say or feel such a thing.
Love is perhaps the most evil of all emotions. Everyone seems to think its such a wondrous thing; a warm, fuzzy emotion. No. Love…

I would like to spend more time on the Writer's Box, but I've been locked into my own Ning network BeYourArt.com. Hopefully, when life slows down I'll be able to come over her more often. The Writer's Box was my first experience with Ning after all.
Recently, I posted a few ideas to Appswell.com. Each month, the idea with the highest user rating is developed as an app for the iPhone or iTouch. Please give support to my iAuthor idea if you feel like it is something you would use. I'm hoping to g…

Okay, the query letter is out of the way (unless anyone wants to make further comment). Here is chapter one of Isis Wept. A few things to keep in mind. You can read it right here, and I've broken it into two easy to digest sections (the chapter is 7500 words long). You can read the whole thing and comment, or you can comment on each section as you read it. Again, no obligation here except to tell me what you really think.
For those who dislike reading on a web site (like me), you should be able…

I write because I need to
breathe. I write because I need to
feel... something. I write because I need something to
affect me.
As a child, I didn't have many outlets. I wasn't able to express myself the way other children could... with sports or other activities. I hid in my books. The type of book was irrelevant. The topic could be math, science, reading, or a novel; it didn't matter as long as it was a book.
At some point (I don't remember when), I realized I could get s…

Hmm...
I guess... now that someone encourages me to write, the screen seems intimidating, in an odd sense.
Right now I'm listening to the light airiness of Emmy Rossum.
Music.
It's like a drug isn't it? I mean, a note or two, they harmonize so beautifully you can feel your throat close, and get that unexplainable feeling that one can only call a "chill." It's not a chill, I tell you. There's more than just "goosebumps." Then, you work with tense forehead lines, trying to get that same lovely me…

In 1987 I was in Form 4 in a village in Zimbabwe, where I was writing plays for my school. The students would act the plays during parents days. The plays were based on student experiences with teachers, as well as life in the village. By then I had convinced myself, with some acknowledgment by and approval of some teachers, I was the school's writer. That acknowledgement felt good, and it kept me writing; and I didn't even worry about publishing then. I was just writing because I liked to write…

I'm new to writing and was a bit shy about posting this. I'm looking for constructive critique to help me along here.
This is a paranormal romance about a young woman who, through a tragic accident, meets an un-likely hero: a were-cat from another dimension. Through a near-death experience, she gets a glimpse of his world, both the good and the bad about it. Seven years later, they are re-united and she must make a choice: To stay in her world and face the possibility of never seeing him again,…

What do you do when you are a writer and observe a historical event unfold and you know the truth? Should you write the truth and burst the lies of the present period so that those in future periods can know the reality of the era, or should you promote the…

We all know that it is socially unacceptable for an author to write their own book reviews, but do you know why? In society people promote everything they do. Paris Hilton promotes her sexy self, Steve Jobs promotes the iPod and Martha Stewart promotes her ve…

Let it be known that I never have the dreaded writer's block. But sometimes I do get stuck. It may be from working on too many projects at once.
I usually work on more projects than I can complete, though my main focus is on one or two at a time. When I'm stuck I play a trick on my mind. I begin working on a different project. Seems my mind can't help throwing out random bits and pieces of information for lots of different stories. So all I have to do is work on something else and what I need f…

[This was my reply to an original Blog post created on 12.15.2008 by Mary Deal entitled, “Frustration”. She posed the original question, “How do you handle frustration if and when your Muse takes a nap?”]
(Reply by Gena A. Etheridge-Seltzer on December 17, 2008):
"Hi Mary! Hope all is well your way. I hadn't dropped by in a few days, but will check back w/you again soon.
Q: How do you handle frustration if and when your Muse takes a nap?
Mary: regarding this writer's buzz-word "MUSE"?...being…
