I was in London many years ago and did all of my traveling on the Underground and I never noticed anyone talking while on the subway at all. The silence was deafening. If Londoners talk at all on the subway now, they are far louder than in 1990.

Thus, if indeed God is--per our friend Mr. Walker's scourful analogy--an Almighty "Cat", he has therefore solved his own conundrun. Brilliant! Thank you sir!

I agree with you whole heartedly Mark. The problem is we are there. whether we were Right, wrong or indifferent in going there. I don't see a way out without bringing the war to our own doorsteps.

Perhaps I can clarify this issue about the existence of God. A simple mathematical argument settles it. Consider the following puzzle: what are the chances of an event of probability p occurring at least once during 1/p trials? For example, roll ...

Thinking up snappy tag lines

I'm taking a short coffee and cigarette break after finishing a magazine article (about an inside the pants holster, if you're interested) and shooting (!) it off to the Editor. That job out of the way, I suppose I'd better bash on and hammer out another thousand or so words for the latest John and Sally Pilgrim saga. But, hang on a minute. I've just thought of what I think could be a great tag line:

"She's smart, she's sexy ... and she kills people."

Could be a description of a… Continue

Going Back to Dear Old Blighty

Well, it’s finally fixed. My wife (the Amazon Queen) and I will be flying off to England in September, for a two week vacation. Despite my plea that I don’t like traveling with the lower classes (whining kids, crying babies, and fat, Spandex-clad women), she refused to let me book first class tickets, so we’ll be flying steerage on the British Airways flight from Phoenix to Heathrow.

Following long discussions, we’ve planned this trip carefully, and we’ll not only be seeing the tourist sights t… Continue

Tony,

Thanks for your good wishes, and I'm sorry if you think my promotional activities are Spam. I assure you they are not. You can of course choose not to open them. I only send info on my work to those who have listed themselves as my friends but I will remove you from that list and you will receive no more form me.

Best wishes for your future career.

I too recall the use of raspberry canes as throwing spears, though I never wrought havoc on a greenhouse with them. Such memories of childhood become more agreeable as we age...

Tony - I've had a friend request from Jen Thomas that I conjecture is the same as the one you received, and my gut response was similar to yours. I checked out the link and found the type of money-making scheme (scam?) you'd expect - and noted a disclaimer at the bottom of the page to the effect that Google doesn't endorse, support or have anything to do with it. I've therefore sent a message to Dana alerting her to what the new recruit is doing and suggesting that a word of friendly advice might be in order. (I didn't explicitly propose the Grand Order of the Boot.)

Hi Tony... Presumably you're planning your trip back to Blighty for next month, so I expect you're pretty busy; but if you're on TWB at all and fancy reading a 5500 word spoof fairy-tale that might amuse you, there's now one on my blog!

I don't doubt the magnitude of America's problems, Tony - essentially a huge gulf between the very rich (often corrupt) and the very poor (forced either into crime or into fundamentalist religion - or both). And I agree that corruption among Britain's politicians is chickenfeed compared to what happens in Washington - or for that matter, Brussels. But I've never seen the British public so angry for so long than they've been over the MPs' expenses scandal! Even Sir Fred and his ilk didn't arouse such communal ire.

What I'd doubt in your analysis is the presumption that greed is a British import from the USA. We have our home-grown variety, fostered by the 1980s government, which made selfishness a virtue and philanthropy a matter for contempt. Subsequent governments haven't reversed that revolting degradation of our system of values. In fact, they've been elected because they've subscribed to it. I believe it was a parallel development with Reagan's America, not a derivative thereof - but no more morally defensible. It was the root cause of the expenses scandal, and of the banking collapse and all woes associated therewith. Thus, public anger has been directed against a symptom, not the disease; a twig rather than the root and trunk.

Notwithstanding which, I hope September brings you good tidings in respect of a possible future home back in East Yorkshire! Good to hear from you again.

Hello Tony - Thanks for the message! Crich is about 30 miles from here but I know it well. I haven't visited York for years though I have friends near there.

The recession is a nightmare for most people, one way or the other, so I'm sure it will be difficult to sell your house at present. But I hope you'll be able to return to your native land ere long, if that's your aim.

Things are no better on this side of the pond, of course. Consider poor Sir Fred Goodwin, recently "retired" CEO of the Royal Bank of Scotland, who succeeded in bringing the institution to the brink of total ruin - no mean achievement. There were many protests about his £550,000 annual pension, doubtless the voices of petty envy, including those belonging to former RBS employees who have lost their incomes, homes, families etc. as a result of the crash. Dear Sir Fred, out of pure goodness of heart, has decided to hand back £200,000 p.a. How is the poor man going to survive on £350,000 a year? What a world, to demand such self-sacrifice.

I was introduced to this site by Mari Sloan, who wanted me to participate in the workshop on POV that she's set up and run (in collaboration with Dana). I've joined in the chat following her teaching sessions and I've posted my contribution for tomorrow... What further contribution I can make remains to be seen, but I'm happy to help other authors as far as my limited ability allows!

As to the scheme on my profile page, I'm always open to suggestions! Frankly, I think my page would be easier to look at if it had your book cover on it ;-P

Set's todger? Does that mean I don't even have to look to know you're a Brit?

Anyhow, it wouldn't be Set's todger, but Osiris's. Not giving away spoilers here for anyone who knows the basics of Egyptian legend, but after Isis escapes from Set and locates her dead husband's body, she drags it back to the Egyptian marshes and does her mojo to resurrect him. This drives Set absolutely bananas. After all, he murdered Osiris for a reason; now he might have to do it all over again? Set finds Isis with Osiris's body before the resurrection is completed. He takes the body, chops it up into itty bitty pieces, and has his men spirit those pieces to the far ends of the earth. That'll teach Isis! And just in case she doesn't get the point, he gives special orders concerning the disappearance of Osiris's penis. The only penis he wants Isis noticing is his own.
Yep, those Egyptians. They didn't shy from the juicy stuff.

At last, Tony! I got to see some of your work. Stumbled across it on authornation.com, got the link to your website from there. I must say, I do see what you mean by powerful covers with a minimum of effort & clutter, although to be sure, its not likely I'll be anymore excited about reading any of yours, than you will ever be about reading any of mine. Interesting cover work though. Did you do those yourself, or, did you hire a graphic designer?

Hahn! That's a new and interesting twist of both history and bio. (concerning your comment on "The Apocalypse...")! Thanks Tony, I never heard that before. So, are you now a US citizen, or, are you just vacationing with us?

As for the nature of Gog and Magod, they're definitely not the "good guys" in God's eyes!
