Hey well this is interesting.
I think both have merits I think that Tolkien is still way ahead of his time, I tried to watch one of the films on tv (have not read books) I found it a bit slow But I am sure the die hards will lap up every word of ...
I can't really comment, I'd like to say Rowling as Cary said, she was able to reach a younger audience and show them the joys of reading, but then again I haven't really read much of Tolkien (only the hobbit i think), but on the other hand Rowling...
Tolkien is the best overall, J.K. Rowlings she can stuff it in the trash can lol but then again her style is ok but i wish she had did something but what i can't say. I can deal with the movies on a so so basis but I will not read her books. I enj...
I think that it is entirely possible that in twenty years we'll consider Harry Potter to be a classic of its type It has certainly spun off a lot of copycats!
Tolkien was the master, Rowlings the student. I loved both But as Graves said you can't compare the two. The Harry Potter series while excellent are more or less the comedy relief of the genre. Of course they have been written for the younger gene...

I doubt if I'll ever see my work on Broadway. The whole dialogue versus action thing threw me for a while also, but I have worked hard on it. I did an exercise that taught me a lot. I wrote a scene using no dialogue at all. It made me see things in a totally different way. Have you had much luck with your screenwriting?
