The Writer's Box

Where New Writers Find Their Voice

Information

Hollywood Knights

I am on a crusade (get it -- knights) to establish a support group for screenwriters designed to pass information and ideas along and to lend a shoulder to cry upon. (I also love the Bob Seger song "Hollywood Nights").

In response to the comments below about writing screenplays, I think that it is important to look at that particular form in two ways, first visually (movies are all about pictures), and second, as a description of growth, change, and challenge. Unlike plays which are all about words, dialogue is incidental to films; a necessary evil. After all, movies were born in the silent era, and for decades they developed their bones with only pictures and music to tell the tale, and convey the emotion. I began as a playwright, and I love the spoken word. But almost every film these days is hacked apart by the buyers until the dialogue is at a minimum. it took me quite a few scripts to learn how to be economical with my words (unlike this comment). Godd luck.

I am new to the group. Although I joined The Writer's Box because I wanted to get more serious about writing fiction and non-fiction, I write mostly screenplays these days.

I'm trying to learn how to write a screenplay and have begun translating my novel into one. Lord knows, I need support.

As you know, Steve, it's been a while since I worked with screenplays, but I still remember lots of my training.

Screenplays are just like any other writing - with right and wrong ways to do them. Fortunately for screenplays, you have programs with great formatting to follow. It's what you stuff into that formatting that makes or breaks your chances.

How are you doing on your present screenplay?

Do you also write short plays?

Do you know any places to submit short plays to get them read or produced?
