Character Workshop

A place for learning to develop strong characters.

How we develop characters:

Most often we develop characters, at least loosely, around the personalities of people we know. Therefore, this group is intended to give people the tools to help them create strong characters for stories, novels, screenplays, and the like.

Choose a group member and create a fictional character out of him/her, using what you know of the person, and some embellishments if you choose. What personality would he/she have? What genre would they best fit in? What are the character's strengths and weaknesses?

Please note that this isn't meant to be a character bashing exercise; however, all members are potential targets for any other member. Have fun with it.

Caution: Those who are sensitive and/or believe everyone loves them may not want to join.

Note: You don't only have to use this group for the above exercise. Any character development tips, questions, etc are more than welcome.

Characters can be so very hard sometime not letting one become another, it's when I have three or four thats when it becomes harder.

Welcome, Logan. I'm glad you could join the group. Please feel free to make it your own. And don't rely on the person you created the group to keep things going...I have it on good authority she's terrible at upkeep.

Yeah, I've changed and rearranged your character a million times, but I'm working on it, uh, you.

So that was the gentlemen- now here is his conversation with another character - let's see if this one becomes obvious:
She wasn't looking straight into his blue eyes, but she nearly whispered "It isn't working for me, and you may not know why..." He couldn't help but wonder if she was being coquettish and if so, was it deliberate?
"My dear you have such a splendid way of saying what you mean, I think it's your eyes, they aren't black really, they are brown I'd imagine, were I to get close enough to gaze lovingly into them; but you seem almost ill at ease when I touch you?"
She was taken with him, she knew it, it was his deft cleverness, "Ah, so you mean that you think I am flirting with you?"
"No, no, not flirting, not at all, it's something perhaps in the way you hold your fork..."
She laughed the little laugh, not full throated, but, constrained; "why what a magnificent way to put it, you are a love, an absolute love." She shook her shimmering black mane alluding to the energy of the animal she mimicked, and her smile, her gentle touch and her laughing eyes all gave him the impression that the lights were green, the fast lane was open, the exits onto the freeway weren't clogged and it was time to- well, you get the image, right?
So he decided to jump, "tell you what, I don't usually do this sort of thing on a first luncheon you understand, but would you like to join me this evening for an early late nightcap?" She was beginning to respond as he continued, "lets say around 6:30ish?" She was offset by his confidence, and somewhat amused; he was acting like he was in control and she found that made her jaw break into a grin as she managed not to laugh out a reply of, "once again you catch me, you really feel me, don't you, wow, what an experience, how could I miss a chance like that?"
"Great I shall meet you downstairs then?"
The blue dress she allowed to flow around her form, touching her thigh, rose with her from the table and her gentle sweep across his resting hands atop the table only served to heighten his sense of her restless but sensual jaw-line. "You are, of all the gentlemen I've known, supremely challenging and wonderful, you have a smile to match my own, and I suspect, a soul that may as well, can't wait until later dear..." She was gone so quickly he wondered if she were real?

Ah see "if ya gets it my sweet..." - suave sophisticated anti ne'er do well, 50ish, slightly graying, with piercing blue grey eyes that see into and through the souls of those whom he chooses to interact with. This hale and hearty gentle soul has a deeper side that is hidden so well that nobody suspects him, they don't even conjecture that a gentlemen such as himself, working at a bank, such as he does, in collections of all things, wouldn't have to travel on occasion, at the bosses behest. He seems a natural, except for his lack of companionship, but the ladies in the village seem to think the world of him, and many take him to long lunches, rumor making lunches on many occasions. He is merry telling jokes often, smiling constantly, and enjoys life, it is a genuine enjoyment of everything life- which he shares abundantly with anyone who will get into earshot of a hearty "hale and good mornin' there..." which isn't any form of a standard greeting, but this gentlemen doesn't do standard, doesn't dress standard, wears matched clothes, colourful but not adroit. At the end of the day, everyone agrees, collections must agree with him, and he surely is successful, and everyone he meets thinks the world of him. The comment most often made about him is that it's odd he isn't attached at his age? ...okee...doke...who is it?
