The Writer's Box

Where New Writers Find Their Voice

Now before anyone jumps to any conclusions, no I'm not suicidal. I'm just asking a simple question. I want to know why any of us live. We're born and eventually we die, so what exactly is the point of the years in between?

You see when we die we go to "heaven" (or wherever- depending on your religious views) and we're safe. Based on the christian religion when we go to Heaven we can't get sick and we no longer hurt so why on earth do we decide to live? Why do we walk around day by day waiting for our day of dying? Is it to find love? Is it to find yourself? Maybe we're aren't even trying to find anything at all. If that's the case than what are we doing here?

My, you sure are curious about some strange things, Cassie.
IN MY OPINION, as a baby growing up, you have no choice. The parents decide if you are going to live or die, but since you are their child, they have a love to see you live. As the child gets older and into the age of comprehension, you develop a fear of the great darkness, so your desire to live increases almost to the point of paranoia. Then the older you get, the more fearful you become of the darkness and dying, so you do everything you can to continue living. Why else would these 'aged' citizen want to do anything to live a little longer? As I said, this is my opinion, simplified.
I tried to stay away from any really psychological explanations...since I am not a psychologist...

Save a seat for me Blind.

Actually Cassie, I came up with the answer to this question years ago. It was one of my "meaningless ramblings". Go see my blog post "What is Our Purpose."

I see life as a set of challenges. You solve something and move on. In between time you do as much as you can to enjoy life and learn and explore.

There are many reasons for WHY we are here. The two most basic of those are to learn and the other is to love.Love is the strongest of human passions. I know that there are those out there who would argue that point, but they'd be wrong. (HA) To learn to love as the experience was meant to be experienced is truly a blessing beyond description. It is not just a feeling, it's an expression. It is the "I can't wait to get home and snuggle with you" feeling. It's the "butterflies" that you get in the pit of your stomach while waiting for them to get off the plane. It is the pain that you feel when they leave this earth and you behind.
We are here to learn what makes us all different and what we must do to get along with one another; which is something that we have still not learned to do. We are still too self centered and this is still very much a "ME" world. WE are supposed to be learning how to improve ourselves so that we can get along, and until we do there will be pain and suffering. that's why when we go "HOME" again, there is no pain or suffering: its is in that time that we will have learned and seen how to do all of the things that we were supposed to have while here on earth.
Or maybe it is just like those out there who would have us believe that this is all that there is; however still why live in chaos when you could be living in peace? I have said it before and I will stand by what i have said: I would rather live a lie and die having that be all there is, than to live as the world would have me and find out on death's bed that there is a God and I missed the boat.

I don't believe in gods or whatever so I believe that the life we live here is all we get and we better make the most of it. Life is truly what you make it - if you believe the cup is half empty, you'll always get the half empty one rather than the half full one :)

Life should be an adventure, a discovering of the world around us. That's its purpose.

Jayne :)

We live because we know nothing else. We die because that's the only inevitable conclusion to life. What we do in between is just filler. It's as simple as that, in my opinion.

Liz, please don't insult people or their discussion topics. Cassie is simply attempting to do what many others on this site do - get people to think and write. If you don't like the discussion, ignore it. This topic is actually one of the least inane, unless you think life is pointless.

I suppose you could also say that life is what happens while you're busy ridiculing others...

Personally - I find it hard to believe that there is a person alive that has never wondered...

Why are we here - where did we come from - what's it all about
