The Writer's Box

Where New Writers Find Their Voice

Johnell McLean

What do you want to accomplish with your writing?

I have been so incredibly excited lately about my writing. I write because I want and need to. I love it. It brings me joy, helps me to organize, and keeps me focused. I have accomplished so much lately that I feel proud of myself. I am really looking forward to getting paid for it, but if I don't, I will still write, because it helps me out and makes me feel good.

So, what do you want to accomplish with your writing? Money, fame, therapy?
A little of it all?

I think I could hit 50000 in 30 days if I was able to put in at least six hours per day. When I was committed to writing my book (which I am hoping to be again), I was getting 1000 words in between the hours of 9 and 12 at night. Now, you may not think my writing makes sense, but that's where I was. On days where I had a full day, I was hitting 3000 words. 50000/30 = 1667. The whole trick is to find a rich benefactor who will let me write full-time!

The intent of the ludicrous nanowrimo goal of 50000 words is to get writers writing. Face it, most of us wanna be writers work at jobs, raise families, take kids to little league and whatnot that keeps us from being able to focus on writing. Most people that participate in nanowrimo will probably never publish anything but many of them may never attempt to write that book that they always wanted to write without focusing a relatively short period of time to it.

Writing 50,000 words in one month isn't going to produce a work of art but it can give you an extremely rough draft to work on later.

Thousands of people have been doing it for 10 years now. I doubt that I will achieve the 50,000 words but I'm going to give it one heck of a try anyway. I will probably be completely rewriting it a couple of months after I recover from the trauma.

Thanks for the advice on writing for newspapers and magazines.
