The Writer's Box

Where New Writers Find Their Voice

Johnell McLean

What do you want to accomplish with your writing?

I have been so incredibly excited lately about my writing. I write because I want and need to. I love it. It brings me joy, helps me to organize, and keeps me focused. I have accomplished so much lately that I feel proud of myself. I am really looking forward to getting paid for it, but if I don't, I will still write, because it helps me out and makes me feel good.

So, what do you want to accomplish with your writing? Money, fame, therapy?
A little of it all?

In all honesty, and I hope I don't sound too corny here, my dream is to write that one poem or article or story that truly makes a difference. That is so profound to someone that it changes their lives in some small way. Something that changes the mind of someone who has lived there lives as a racist, or helps someone stand tall when they have spent their whole lives cowering down.

In short I want to write something that will be remembered for all time. The way the greats have, greats like Shakespeare, Socrates, Hemingway. Something that will make the sheep in this country stand up and say "No More". It may never happen, but a man can dream can't he?

James, that is so truly you. I may not have ever met you in person, but I have always thought that you write with a purpose. Yes, you have a talent and venture off to pursue other topics, but I know that you have that one true purpose that drives your writing. I admire you for your truth and your anti-PC-ism.

Thanks Johnell.I depend on all of you to keep me grounded in my principles and focused on my dreams. You all do that quite nicely. I am very happy to have you all as dear friends.

I feel the same, James. I think that this place is so wonderful. We are all one big family trying to help each other succeed and that is what gives me the inspiration to keep going at it.

It may sound lame, but I don't really plan on accomplishing anything with my writing other than becoming a better writer. Some money would be nice. I definitely don't want to be famous. But I don't have any real dreams of "accomplishing" anything.

I could just be too pessimistic in that I don't see myself as ever being good enough to have anything published. I don't consider myself a talented writer. I love to write. I'm not fishing for compliments. It's just the truth.

The Writer's Box is the best thing to happen to me in . . . maybe ever. I'm constantly coming across so many writers of all kinds with such amazing ability. It's like being part of the world's greatest never-ending party. So I guess when I opened my account I accomplished everything I wanted with my writing.

You don't give yourself enough credit Markus. You are an excellent writer. Here is what I see as your only problem, and this is only my opinion. You worry to much about what other people think. You have to please yourself first. There are going to be people out here that aren't going to like anything. So why bother. Write for yourself then write for the world.

I don't know, 9. I think I please myself a lot. That's why I write a lot. But I never try to please anyone the world which is probably why I think about getting published or recognized. I think I may be too selfish in trying to please only myself. Or maybe I'm just a weirdo. Well, I'm pretty sure I'm a weirdo. Maybe I should try writing with others in mind.

I'm going to be completely honest - the MAIN accomplishment I'm after is to get away from working for "the man".

I want to be able to get out of bed and drink my tea while I write at my leisure.

That's reason number one...

Reason two is because I really love doing it. It's fun for me. I guess maybe therapeutic as well.

Money (hopefully) then I want to write something that changes the world... I know it is trite but if I can make the world a better place with my writing I will feel that everything else is gravy.

I am with you, Blind. I want to be able to just get up in the morning and schedule my day to my leisure and to be able not have to go to work, but to write all day as I see fit. You know Stephen King does it.

That would be wonderful. Just think, you would have time to travel, time to do research, if needed, for your writing. With all the time you could have some wonderul experiences and use them in your writing. That is the ultimate prize.

Of course just knowing you are published is great too.

:) It would certainly be nice to be able to schedule my days... But I'm lazy... that is why I've ended up a slave for the man...

Vic, it's a nice thought, but probably more suited to a Hallmark card. Screw making a difference! Screw making the world a better place! (a deadly global pandemic, preferably one that only affects those with an IQ the same size as their hat size would probably have a better effect).

"No one but a blockhead ever wrote for anything, except money" Samuel Johnson wrote that back in the 1700s, and it's just as true today.

Those of you who claim to want just to 'make a difference' or 'make the world a better place', need to get a grip and grow a little real ambition. Write with passion, write for publication, and most important, write for money!
