The Writer's Box

Where New Writers Find Their Voice

How many times have you heard "Don't open that door!" They all warned you. There is no good to be found behind it. But of course, being told these things only make you reach for the handle.

Tell a story - real or fictional - about the door you open. What is behind it and why should you have left it closed?

Let me say this about that...my older brother told me not to open the door when I was nineteen. I didn't listen of course and now I have a 28 year old son whom I admire greatly.

See? Older siblings really don't know what's best. Seriously, great story.

My mother told me that when I announced to her that I was marrying my first wife. I had been hurt so many times by girlfriends that I was tired of it. So I married the first girl that said yes. Mom said it would be a mistake, I didn't listen. We got married June 5. August 14th I left. She had a severely retarded child, I was working for H.E.B grocery store as a night stocker working the graveyard shift. I came home and told her, "if you are going to go anywhere, get me up so I can keep an eye on Jason". Jason liked to climb into the icebox and pull things out and onto the floor. Jason was very small and the Icebox that we had at the time was the old latch type.

She said she would, so I went to bed. About an hour or so later I woke to a very loud crash. I ran into the kitchen only to find Jason sitting in the icebox. The only thing keeping the icebox door from closing on him was his foot. Rhonda was no where in the house. I got Jason out of the Ice box, put him to bed after cleaning him up and waited for Rhonda. After two hours she came home. I was livid to say the least. She thought it would be a great idea to go 5 houses down to drink coffee with her friend.

I thought it would be an even better idea to leave. She was unwilling to keep the house, herself, or the kids clean and she obviously didn't care that her son could have been killed, so I felt the marriage was not going to work.

Ouch. That's a rough one, James. And couldn't have been all that easy to run out the door when there are little ones involved.
